How To Get Motivated

First up, have you joined the new Facebook group yet? If not, please do – this week I’ve written about Christmas and the benefits of cold!

Today, let’s look at discipline.

It is THE answer to staying consistent with your plan. It’s the thing which will make you stick to your routine even when you don’t want to. It means you’re not hanging on to your willpower hoping you feel the urge to do the things you need to do, and instead, you just do them because you have an internal motivation to do it.

For […]

The Minimum Effective Dose

First up, have you joined the new Facebook group yet? If not, please do – this week I’ve written about calorie counting and whether it is important, and how to deal with mid-afternoon tiredness.

Now, for today, let’s talk about the importance of the minimum effective dose.

Sometimes, when we use the phrase ‘minimum effective dose’ it sounds a bit like a bad thing, but actually, I think it might be the only correct answer, especially when it comes to nutrition and exercise.

Imagine you want to lose a few pounds. You know that at its most simple […]

My New Favourite Statistic

I posted something in the new Facebook group last week which is my new favourite fact.

Apparently the average age we feel the happiest with our bodies is… 74!

I love this. So many people spend so much of their life feeling unhappy in their bodies and I think this statistic has the potential to free us from this feeling.

While the tide is definitely changing and images we are shown are more ‘real’ and less airbrushed, a huge majority of us still feel the pressure to look a certain way and to be able to maintain the same look […]

When Goals Are A BAD Thing

Hang on. Goals are good… They give us something to work towards – don’t they?

Well, yes.

But as with so many other things, the middle of the road is the place to be. You see, if you are wholly focussed on a goal, you are likely missing out on the other benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.

If you are only eating well and exercising for the sake of your one goal, you’re not making the same connections to the bigger picture.

Being completely and exclusively focussed on a single goal can lead to an on/off cycle […]

Don’t Let Perfect Be The Enemy Of Good

Sometimes, life has an annoying habit of getting in the way. Something can pull you off track and before you know it, all the hard work you’ve put in to creating an exercise and healthy eating routine has slipped away completely and you’re back to where you started.

Having to repeatedly pick yourself up from the same start point over and over again is a really disheartening cycle to find yourself in, and it is no surprise that at some point so many people think ‘what’s the point in trying’.

What I’d love you to know […]

You Don’t Need More Information To Make A Start

I came across a study headline the other day which confirmed what we’ve known for about 20 years.

It said that people (in this study it was people who were overweight or obese) who eat cereal for breakfast are hungry again sooner and eat a bigger lunch than those who eat eggs for breakfast.

Of course it’s interesting to have this confirmed by proper research, but this has been demonstrated in real life many, many times over – and I think we are asking the wrong questions.

I’m willing to bet that you already know you should eat […]

I Can’t Lose Weight – Nothing Works For Me

We blame our genetics on a lot of things – perhaps justifiably so – but, for mainstream weight loss and fitness at least, genetics are not as powerful as we’d like to believe.

There’s a quote I always remember “the genes load the gun, but the environment pulls the trigger”.

While you MAY have genes which make it difficult for you to lose weight, get strong or gain muscle etc, you’re not doomed to failure because you can still control your environment.

The more likely issue is that you haven’t been given the right information, or support, and […]

Perimenopause and Sleep

It’s no secret that menopause can play havoc with your sleep quality. As we transition through menopause, our levels of oestrogen and progesterone in particular are declining. And this can affect our bodies sleep / wake cycle, also known as our circadian rhythm.

But sleep disturbances are not ONLY caused by our hormones. You do have some power over the situation, and how you experience it too.

Start by noticing what you’re feeling, and treating yourself with kindness. Remember also that you’re not alone. Send some kind thoughts to other women having the same experiences as you, and […]

Why I Won’t Write A Meal Plan For You

Sometimes, a client will ask me if I will write them a meal plan – and I always say no.

Why is that?

Being given a meal plan seems to be a common thing, and it feels like it should give you a fast track to success – so why would I refuse?

Well, I would much rather arm you with the information you need in order to make better decisions, than simply tell you what to do. Developing this autonomy is crucial because part of the process of losing weight and improving your health needs to involve figuring out how to […]

Are You Increasing Your Health & Fitness ‘Savings’ – Or Spending Them?

Losing weight and getting fit is hard for a variety of reasons.

One of the reasons is that there is a cost to reaching your goal.

Choices have to be made, and while I don’t believe you have to deny yourself any fun, there will be times where you have to make the right decision and not the decision you’d like to make.

But, there is also a cost to NOT staying fit and lean.

I like to think of health and fitness as a bank balance. There’s no need to eat a perfect diet 100% of […]
