Is Your Mindset Helping You?

I listened to an interesting conversation a few weeks ago which made me think.

When you begin working on your health and fitness, it’s helpful to go into it with the right mindset.

For me, whatever your goal, the right mindset is an open one with the overall aim of figuring out how to make the changes you’re making last, and fit into your life for the long term.

This means experimenting and learning – because you’ll never get everything right, right from the get go. And things will never be perfect 100% of the time either!

An unhelpful mindset might be feeling that you need to punish yourself for whatever crime against diet or exercise you feel you’ve been making up to this point.

Another might be feeling that you need to make these changes to make yourself feel like a better person.

I’m sure you can see how the different mindsets would affect the way you’d be inclined to approach your goals.

I’ll often suggest a client makes a point of choosing the way they speak to themself – adding emotions to actions is less helpful than it is to just observe what happens, and identify it without emotion.

If things aren’t heading in the direction you’d like, take an objective look back and figure out how you might be able to do things differently. Experiment with that idea and see whether you need to make a further adjustment.
