I pretty much never send specific exercise suggestions on this mailing list.

There is so much variation between what each of you as individuals should be doing. What your mobility is like, your fitness and whether you have much experience with exercise all has an impact on the exercises I’d suggest for you. And that’s before we start to think about how much time you have available, what types of exercise you enjoy and how much stress we ought to be adding on to you.

This all said, after my email about not gaining weight over Christmas, quite […]

Do You Find Exercise A Chore?

Of course, you can pick anyone who pops into your mind as being an avid exerciser, and be pretty certain that they have days when they just can’t be bothered and where they’re only going through the motions.

Whatever you’re doing and however much you love it; some days you’re just not very good at it and everything feels too difficult.

But there’s a huge difference between these situations and only ever doing a particular exercise because you feel like you should, or because you’re only thinking about the calories you’re burning etc […]

Why It’s Not Worth Exercising To Burn Calories

Exercise. The magical thing which earns us calorie free cakes and ice creams.

And the harder we work, the more calories we burn and the more cakes we can eat with no consequence.

If only. Oh goodness me, IF ONLY!!

Let’s take a look at the numbers.

Low intensity exercise, like going for a slow walk on the flat, burns about 4 calories a minute – so about 250 calories in an hour.

Moderate intensity exercise, which probably covers most intentional exercise like going for a constant paced swim or a cycle, or perhaps even your average gym session, burns […]

As we get older, our bodies change. It’s probably not purely a side effect of ageing, instead it’s indicative of changing priorities and focus.

We have less time to focus on ourselves and so we need to re-focus our exercise routines on maintaining strength and mobility as much as possible. If we do them well, these movements will also have the added bonus of helping keep our weight in check.

In my mind, there are three key movements anyone over 40 needs to be doing regularly. These are:

Rowing Movements
Your shoulders are your most mobile joint […]

Sleep is a hugely important part of the health jigsaw. In fact, it is the basis upon which everything else you do is built. If you are low on sleep, or your sleep is poor quality, the effects of the effort you make to improve your health won’t be as good as they could be.

Sleep is becoming more talked about and the true importance is becoming more recognised as we start to understand the true need for sleep.

Did you know, for example, that if you are low on sleep (averaging 6 hours or less a night) and […]

A flatter middle is one of the most desired outcomes from starting a weight loss quest. Our middle is something of a focal point on our bodies and can tell us (and others!) a lot about whether we are fit and healthy – fat seems to store in the area annoyingly easily.

It is true to say that the absolute number one thing which you must do in order to improve the look of your middle is get your nutrition right.

This said, using the muscles your stomach is also important, both for looks and for function of your body.

The […]

Personally, I hate getting out of breath. Unless you unleash a hungry lion behind me, you’re highly unlikely to make me run.

Which makes the fact that resistance training is still the king of exercise a wonderful bonus for me.

I believe the times are starting to change for exercise. More and more people are starting to learn of the benefits of resistance training for all round health and fitness.

But this doesnt mean that you suddenly have the time, or inclination, to go to the gym, so if you want to give resistance training a go, how can […]

While other types of exercise certainly hold plenty of benefit, I firmly believe that if you had to exclude all but one type of exercise, the one you would keep would have to be resistance training.

It is the most effective type of exercise you can do for all round health, at every age (arguably, the older you are, the more important it is) and it comes with multiple unique health benefits. Here are my top ten.

1) Obviously, because you are lifting weights, your body will gain muscle. You’re not going to start looking like a bodybuilder, although […]

Last week, we saw how using a menu plan can help you to eat well around a busy life, and I promised this week we would explore ways to add exercise into a busy life.

Now, when you’re rushed off your feet and stressed, I don’t think adding in a tough workout is the right thing to do.

This isn’t to say that strength training isn’t going to give you benefits, because I think it is important for almost everyone to fit strength training into their lives.

High stress levels need to be countered with plenty […]
